About The Artists
Phil

Phillip Greene

Phillip developed an early interest in art and was largely self taught.  He was inspired in his college days by two books by the late Ted Kautsky, who was, in his view, a great watercolorist. Those books, Ways With Watercolor and Trees and Landscapes are still available from Amazon.

Although he has worked in many styles, including abstraction, he prefers realism. Many of the animal portraits are purposely done exclusive of any habitat illustration. The stark background focuses the eye on the animal, not the terrain. Some of the paintings do have typical African Veldt or bush entourage. Mr. Greene takes great pleasure in capturing the beauty of nature in his paintings and sharing them with others. Now that he and his wife have settled in Tucson, Arizona, he plans to paint some of the unique scenery and animals of the great Sonoran Desert.

Phillip is, among other things, a retired architect and a free lance writer. He is a charter member of the Southwest Authors' Guild, and he writes fiction and poetry. He has written many of the Blogs on this website chronicaling the travels of he and his wife in southern Africa.

Peggy

Peggy Greene

She believes that the ability to draw or sketch is a universal form of communication. After traveling throughout the world for more than twenty years she found that the ability to sketch bridged the gap between English and several other languages. Pictures are truly better than words. The beauty of expressing artistry with beads is universal and available in nearly any country.

For the present, Peggy's contribution to the website contains her one-of-a-kind necklaces and earrings.  Only rarely has Peggy made a copy of a piece at the request of a customer, and that is subject to having the necessary components.  Many necklaces are built around a one-of-a-kind component.  For Peggy, the fun is in the new design, the mix of materials and the colors that will make that piece unique.  Before long, she will also have paintings to display in the website's other galleries.  Peggy's designs all show her inherent sense of design and her impeccable eye for color. They are truly collector's items.

Peggy is a former business analyst  for a banking software company. She is also a charter member of the Southwest Authors' Guild and writes fiction. She has authored some of the blogs on this web site.

Holly

Holly Greene Hardyman

Holly lives in Grayslake, IL which is north of Chicago. She grew up in Central Illinois where she married and raised three children who are now grown and out of the house. This leaves her more time for her creative pursuits. Three years ago she moved north for her job as a software engineer.  Because her job is very logical, she needed a creative outlet as well.  She has always had a flair for arts and crafts and has made things all her life.  It is her way of giving of herself and she often gave the things she created as gifts to others. She has a keen sense of color and design and uses that talent as a way to express and evoke feelings.

Holly also love textures, so she took readily to spinning about three years ago.  She has not yet found her  niche in the spinning, knitting and felting world, or discovered how to balance that new passion with her old one of quilting.  But it will come.  She has a great stash of fabric, yarn and fibers of all kinds.  She is fascinated by the variety of materials and techniques as well as the process of turning raw materials into something beautiful.  We're expecting great new creations from her.

Holly is a software engineer.  Previously she created scenery that became the basis for the flight simulator software bought by Microsoft from her previous employer. Her talent for art and design surfaced early in high school when she won the home design competition in her school as a junior, competing against classes in two major high schools. The house was built the following year by the construction shop class.

Random

African Legends

There is an interesting bird that lives in the southern part of Africa. It is the Hadeda Ibis, according to my friend David, who lives in Johannesburg. It looks like an Egyptian Ibis but is slightly different. David says they are probably a distant cousin. The Egyptian Ibis inhabits the parts of Africa north of Kenya and the Hadeda Ibis inhabits Southern Africa, in and around Johannesburg. They are a very large bird with a long curving beak, but what makes them interesting is not so much their looks as their habits. Whenever they take to the air, they squawk and raise such a noise that you would think someone was murdering them. They like to roost in tall trees. One particular flock of them liked to roost in the tall pine trees adjacent to our apartment in Johannesburg. They were early risers, often waking us with their loud squawking at first light, long before we wanted to leave our bed.
