| Giraffe Courtship- Original Painting |
{mosimage Giraffe CourtshipAcrylic Painting or Limited Edition Giclée PrintThis Limited Edition print of a pair of giraffes depicts a male and a female with Baobab trees in the background, whose enormous trunks are a familiar sight in Southern Africa.
Giraffes are herding animals, a herd consisting of a number of females and juveniles controlled and protected by a dominant male. The bachelor males are often seen as a single animal looking for the opportunity to mate. To do so he must challenge the herd's dominant male. It rarely gets violent with most of the action revolving around intertwined necks. Giraffes are graceful when loping across the Veldt but quite awkward when drinking. They must spread their front legs in a knock kneed stance to enable them to reach the water. They are very vulnerable in this position. To keep their blood from rushing to their brain when drinking, they have special valves in the neck arteries that act as back flow preventers.
