Zebra Pendant World Warefarer: African and Peruvian Creation
Full Size Image The polymer clay pendant is a wonder of modern chemistry and timeless artistic skillIn South Africa, some artist went to the trouble to make polymer clay beads with the heads of animals on them. Having played with polymer clay a bit, I was amazed at the intricacy and accuracy of the beads. I bought several and made myself a necklace with five different animals. I wore it to the office and then had to make several more of them for my team members to send home to the U.S. My work greatly reduced the supply. At one point, I asked when it would be replenished, and I was told that the artist did not plan to make any more. I couldn't blame the artist for that so I bought the few that were left. Every color and pattern of these polymer beads represents a separate length of that color, stacked up and molded to form the pattern. To make it square, stacked clay would be put in a mold and then sliced off to make the thin little square. You can't really see the pattern until the slice is made which totally blows my mind. This necklace has the zebra, one of the most intricate of all, and I put it together with some ceramic beads that looked so wonderfully African. Wrong! It turns out the ceramics were imported from Peru. After looking at the variety of beads in the necklace from Africa, China, Peru and heaven knows where else, I decided this little guy is a world wayfarer like me.
