This is my latest quilt made out of sky fabric, in fact all out of sky fabrics, day and night. I also have been enjoying the more abstract pieces for a change of pace. The Hand of Fatima, or Hamsa, which literally means “five”, is a symbol used in charms, jewelry and amulets to protect from or avert the “evil eye”. Fatima refers to the daughter of Muhammed, but there is also a protecting hand in Jewish tradition as well. The symbol itself is believed to predate Islam and is assumed to be used in the Punic religion. Often times this symbol is placed on a necklace, over a baby’s crib or on a doorway for protection. I love the blue colors in the piece and enjoyed the idea of a quilt being used as a protection of sorts. This quilt is a top only, I have not quilted it yet. You can see one piece out of place which I will correct before quilting it. It is a large quilt now and will be bigger when it is finished. |
