Two Inch Hand Carved Bone Ivory Pendant, Hand Carved Ivory Beads, 14K Gold Filled Bead Accents, 14K Gold Filled Lobster Claw Clasp
This little hand carved ivory pendant comes from a little bead shop outside of Johannesburg. The merchant hastened to assure me that it is bone, not tusk ivory. It is so wonderfully African, and after working in and out of South Africa for so many years, I came to appreciate the seemingly innate artistic talent of the native African. No doubt some of the artistry is born of desperation, but the talent for seeing beauty in ordinary things is touching.
Wings of dead butterflies are gathered, handled delicately and end up as pictures of African scenes. Nuts become Guinea Hens, and chunks of wood or rock become wonderful replicas of animals. I think of this when I wear my own little carved head. This is one of the few necklaces I have ever repeated. It is still unique, each head was a little different. |

The river was beautiful, but we saw few animals except for a lone rhinoceros and a few birds. |
